Curbar Ridge Asc of Artists and Painters

Founded in 1954, the Curbar Ridge Association of Artists and Painters was conceived as a focal point for artists living and working in and around the Peak District. Until 2011 it formed the backbone of the Leisure Painters Society of Derbyshire, with monthly meetings offering fellowship and support and organising exhibitions of local artists across the Peak District. Following the EM11 exhibition at Surface Gallery in Nottingham, some members moved on to the Derbyshire Society of Friends while others continued under the Curbar Ridge banner with the intent of developing more opportunities to collaborate and exhibit together. The group still meets monthly and is often to be found walking or sketching along the moorland edge above Curbar and the surrounding Hope Valley.

REMEMBERING JUNE GILLERT

May she walk the moors on sunnier days.

Joining the group a year after she moved to the area in 1988, June Gillert passed away before Christmas. She was 63. Her son James was with her. June’s wry asides were delivered deadpan but it soon became apparent that the slyer her comments, the more she liked you. She would not appreciate sentimentality in recollection, saving her affection for her Irish wolfhound Pilot. The two of them could often be seen striding along the clifftops that line the Hope Valley. Those of us who knew her well will remember the value she found in being a member of the Association, her tireless energy, and her sharp and incisive eye. James plans a joint exhibit of their work, and says June left a variety of pieces that she never shared during her lifetime that he believes include her finest paintings.

Thank you for your visit.
